Potential Use of Aquatic Vascular Plants to Control Cyanobacterial Blooms: A Review

چکیده
Intense “blooming” of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) caused by eutrophication and climate change poses a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems drinking water safety. Preventing the proliferation reducing nutrient load is priority for restoration eutrophic bodies. Aquatic plants play an important role in function structure aquatic ecosystems, affecting physiochemistry bottom sediments, primary production, biotic interactions that support balanced ecosystem. This review examines inhibitory effect vascular on harmful blooms cyanobacteria. are able successfully inhibit growth through various mechanisms, including light availability, creating favorable conditions development herbivorous zooplankton, releasing allelopathic active substances (allelochemicals) with algicidal effect. Allelopathy species-specific therefore acts as one key mechanisms which cyanobacterial populations regulated. However, activity depends factors (species characteristics plants, area, density overgrowth bodies, physiochemical properties allelopathically substances, hydrological hydrochemical regimes, temperature, intensity, etc.), may regulate impact allelochemicals algal communities. The paper also discusses some problematic aspects using fast-growing species control blooms.

Allelopathic control of cyanobacterial blooms by periphyton biofilms.
Periphyton biofilms are natural mixtures comprised of photoautotrophic and heterotrophic complex microorganisms. In this work, the inhibition effects of periphyton biofilms on cyanobacterial blooms were studied in pilot and field trials. Results show that the cyanobacterial species responsible for the blooms had an upper nutrient concentration threshold, below which it could not effectively com...

Nowcasting of harmful algal blooms is important both for the public and for environmental management purposes. In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, are regular phenomena but the past years intense and widespread blooms have caused major environmental concern due to its nuisance, increased nitrogen input and toxicity. One of the most abundant species Nodularia sp. c...
